VAG’s punchy little 1.4 Twincharged engine has found its way into many fine hot hatches over the last few years, and the latest incarnation of this platform is bound to be ripe for a bit of fettling. Gloucestershire based Forge Motorsport has created a beautifully engineered uprated wastegate actuator to be able to cope with higher boost levels on tuned and hard-driven examples.</p>
<p>Each unit is entirely hand-fabricated by Forge’s time-served craftsmen here in the UK, and uses motorsport-quality materials and fabrication methods to create a unit which is both hugely effective and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Usually, with this engine configuration, if the factory actuator fails, you need to purchase the entire combined turbo and actuator assembly. So, not only does the Forge part vastly outperform the original.. it’s also somewhat easier on the wallet!</p>
<p>The Forge actuator is precision CNC machined from a solid aluminium billet and features an adjustable rod and custom fabricated bracket to allow it to be bolted into the factory position as a direct replacement for the original part. With a range of internal springs available, it is the perfect way to allow higher boost levels to be run after other modifications such as ECU remapping have been carried out.</p>

<p>Here are some of the characteristics of the CRF:</p>
<p>•	The CRF air filter makes use of innovative technical solutions to optimize the flow dynamics of the direct air into the engine. The geometry of the CRF has been devised with the objective of using the entire available volume of the standard air-box thanks to an extended filtration surface. The result is better air flow passage in the intake phase thereby maintaining constant air-box pressure.</p>
<p>•	The structure of the CRF is made of carbon fibre which interfaces directly with the original air-box, providing a perfect seal and easy mounting. The structure is manufactured with pre-impregnated carbon materials which are cured in an autoclave. Thanks to this the CRF air filter presents a much reduced total weight whilst having excellent characteristics in terms of rigidity and mechanical resistance.</p>
<p>•	The filtering element is made of a special multi-layer filtration material in RACE configuration which is impregnated with low viscosity oil held between epoxy-coated (to prevent oxidation) aluminium mesh. This enables increased permeability and low air flow resistance guaranteeing highly efficient filtration.</p>
<p>•	The CRF filter was conceived with the objective of withstanding the vibrations and heat produced in movement both in normal road and intensive track use.</p>
<p>•	The CRF filter, as are all BMC filters, can be regenerated and reused. Once the saturation level has been reached the filter can be regenerated through a process of washing and re-oiling using a special BMC kit.</p>

Performance filtration specialist Pipercross has provided the perfect breathing solution for the perennial tuner’s favourite; the Mk 6 Golf Gti. The precision-fabricated intake system has been designed to eliminate all of the compromises inherent within the factory airbox, hugely improving airflow, enhancing both power and drivability. Using induction technology gleaned from the firm’s involvement with the AmD BTCC car, the result is an upgrade that offers racecar levels of technology and finish at a price that is well within the reach of the average enthusiast.</p>
<p>The gains begin with a large cylindrical, triple layer filter. Not only does this boast considerably more surface area than the OEM part, but also, thanks to Pipercross’ unique foam construction, can filter down to a much finer rate than the factory paper unit.. all this, despite flowing at a far greater rate and being far less susceptible to dust and dirt loading.</p>
<p>A smart aluminium shield keeps the filter well away from underbonnet heat and channels ice cold air from the front of the car directly into the filter body, helping to further improve the efficiency of the system.</p>
<p>A hand-wrapped bespoke SamcoSport hose has been designed to provide a perfectly smooth airflow path from the filter neck into the induction system. This drops from 88.5mm to 80mm diameter to fit as per factory, and utilises the factory MAF housing to ensure that the ECU receives all salient data. The whole kit takes around an hour to fit.</p>
<p>Although the system has been designed to fit directly onto the factory corrugated intake hose, drivers looking to really get the most from the induction set-up can also opt for the Stage 2 pipe which goes directly back to the turbo. The new pipe is made of lightweight mandrel bent aluminium, painted with a black crackle finish to give it a decidedly OEM appearance. Unlike other upgraded carbon intake pipes it has a smooth internal profile which improves the passage of air, increasing the flow rate. Being fully interchangeable, the pipe can be fitted to the standard OE airbox or be used as part of a kit. </p>
<p>Pipercross has conducted extensive flow-testing on both components to evaluate potential gains. The stage 2 pipe flows a proven 27% increase over the OEM part, whilst the entire system averaged an astonishing 45% airflow improvement over the original, highlighting just how restrictive it is.</p>

The design team at Scorpion Exhausts have been busy on their latest fitment; the perennial VW Golf GTI. The respected manufacturer has recently turned its attention to the latest version of the best-selling hot hatch and the result is a system that gives noticeable aural and dynamic improvements throughout the rev range. </p>
<p>Two system combinations are available, all being constructed from aerospace grade T304 stainless steel and featuring CNC mandrel bends for optimum gasflow and extraction. The system uses 70mm diameter tubing to balance the perfect back pressure against maximum performance. As one has come to expect from Scorpion, the sound is sporty and crisp, without being overtly loud or annoying on long journeys.</p>
<p>Owners can either opt for the rear system on its own at £585 including VAT, which includes an un-silenced centre section and rear box, terminating in attractive twin 100mm ‘Daytona’ trims. This can also be purchased with integral silencer for £670 including VAT. Or, if preferred, those looking for the ultimate in road-legal performance can also specify a bespoke front and link-pipe set-up with 200 cell Sports Cat, which offers phenomenal gains over the standard system. This costs £575 including VAT. In all cases, each component is fully interchangeable with OEM parts, meaning the system can be upgraded in stages if need be. The cat back system enjoys a lifetime warranty on materials and construction, and the Sports Cat is covered by a class leading 3 year guarantee.</p>

For the first time, the specialist for suspension solutions combines the best from two fields. With the new Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), KW has designed a new a coilover suspension, which uses the original 3-way button to adjust the damping. KW combines the individual height adjustability of the coilover suspension with the adaptive OEM dampening control. The driver can choose between three modes:<br />
“Comfort“ for bad road condition or just a relaxed ride. “Normal“ for sporty daily use as the best compromise between performance and ride comfort or “Sport“ for best handling and response.</p>
<p>The development by the KW engineers means that there is no additional assembly effort. The original strut will be replaced with the KW coilover strut including dampers. The KW strut will be connected with the original plug of Volkswagen by Plug-and-Play. The VW onboard-electronics recognizes the adaptive dampening system at once and regulates the wheel control valve within a millisecond area.</p>

<p>The kit retains all advantages of a typical KW Coilover kit, means: The lowering can be adjusted in between the TÜV  certificated adjusting range. The stainless steel technology “inox-line“ guarantees that all parts remain movable, even under heavy use and in salty winter time.</p>
<p>For the first time the suspension specialist KW combines the individuality and quality of the own coilover suspensions with the comfortable dampening adjustment of an adaptive suspension. The new dynamic damping system, DDC, is available as a complete plug and play solution for the VW Golf Mk VI,  Passat 3C and the Scirocco, equipped with OE damping control.<br />

Forge Motorsport have released a ‘big’ brake kit to fit a wide range of VAG cars. The kits are designed and manufactured at Forge’s Gloucestershire HQ and are suitable for many VAG cars including the Mk5 Golf, Audi A3 and new Scirocco. The Forge brake kit comes in two disk sizes - 330mm for cars running a minimum of 17” diameter wheels and 356mm for vehicles running 19” or larger.</p>
<p>The callipers are machined from solid aluminium 7075 high-grade billet and use heavy duty weather seals to make them road-friendly. All disks are suitable for track use and utilize separate bells for optimum heat dissipation, so the kits can cope with repeated, intensive use without fade.</p>
