ST Suspensions Diversifies Range With ST Classic Suspension Kit For Mk1 Golf
It’s all but impossible to overstate both the importance of the Mk1 Golf and the impact it had on the automotive landscape. It popularised the concept of the hatchback and allowed VW to step out from the shadow cast by the Type 1, the Beetle, and laid the foundations for all the success the firm has enjoyed in the decades since. The Mk1’s position as an aspiring classic has convinced ST Suspensions to base its all new Classic range around the model, meaning Golf owners can now benefit from the firm’s incredibly breadth and depth of experience in this field.
Part of the reason for the Mk1’s success when launched was its ride which managed to be both cosseting and comfy when required, yet taut and rewarding when the going got twisty. Suspension technology has transformed beyond recognition over the course of the last 4 decades though, so ST Suspensions’ all new Classic range promises a massive improvement in terms of damping and road holding over and above the OEM fitted hardware.
The Classic name isn’t merely a title; it refers to the lengths to which ST has gone to in order to make its kit look at home on the mid ‘70s Wolfsburg icon, with front damper inserts designed to retain the OEM damper housings and therefore the factory appearance, not forgetting all new closing caps to complete the look. Retro looking they may be, but said inserts still permit an adjustment range of between 35 and 40mm, more than enough to bring about improvements in both handling and appearance.
Aside from the general improvements brought about by clever design and engineering nous, ST Suspensions Classic kit has another, more impressive feature, adjustable ride height rear dampers. The ability to toggle the ride height at the back of the Mk1 Golf can prove instrumental in achieving an ideal overall setup, and ST’s Classic kit features an adjustable spring platform which permits an adjustment range of 4 positions in 5mm increments; two lower, two higher.
You don’t have to look too hard to find evidence of the innate quality of the kit, nor ST’s close working relationship with KW Automotive, so close that the former can share the latter’s state of the art development facility. The advanced materials employed in the dampers and the bespoke, progressively wound springs are a case in point, and extensive testing upon ST’s own Mk1 Golf has seen massive improvements in terms of road holding and handling as a direct result.
The ST Classic range itself contains distinct fitment options for both hard-top and convertible Mk1s, while the products themselves can be ordered as whole (i.e. a kit comprising both springs and dampers for the front and rear), or separately; springs or front and rear dampers.
